Provenance

Where it came from

The Karok Wrangler was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set for Magic: The Gathering. Set on the plane of Arcavios, the card represents the unique flavor of the Lorehold College, an institution dedicated to history and archaeology where students interact with the spirits of the past. The card was designed to mechanically support a 'tokens' theme, allowing players to conjure spectral creature manifestations to bolster their battlefield presence.

The artwork was illustrated by Jason Kang, who aimed to depict the harmonious, albeit strenuous, relationship between the magical student and the ancient, hulking Karok spirits. The design reflects the scholarly yet adventurous aesthetic of the Lorehold campus, capturing the vibrant magical atmosphere of Strixhaven. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a functional utility piece in limited play formats and thematic commander decks, noted for its ability to turn academic research into tangible reinforcements.
