Provenance

Where it came from

Karplusan Strider was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is notable for being designed as the third installment of the Ice Age block, released over a decade after the original Ice Age and Alliances sets. It was conceived by Wizards of the Coast to complete the narrative arc of the ice-locked continent of Terisiare, utilizing mechanics like cumulative upkeep that had defined the earlier sets of that era.

The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prominent early illustrators in the game's history. Rush leaned into the set's harsh, sub-zero aesthetic by depicting the creature as a towering, rugged entity adapted to the frozen Karplusan wilderness. Upon its release, the card was viewed primarily as a functional creature for the Limited environment, designed to provide players with a persistent threat capable of navigating the set's restrictive, cold-themed mana and environmental conditions.
