Provenance

Where it came from

Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund was originally released in the 2009 Alara Reborn expansion, the final set in the Shards of Alara block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to embody the predatory and chaotic nature of the Jund shard, a plane characterized by a brutal cycle of survival and dragons. Illustrating the immense scale of the character, artist Steve Argyle crafted the artwork to emphasize the tyrant's imposing wingspan and draconic anatomy, solidifying its place as a quintessential high-cost commander for players favoring aggressive, dragon-themed strategies.

The version from 'The List' is a reprinting initiative by Wizards of the Coast that features cards from across Magic’s history appearing in Set Boosters. By including Karrthus in this curated rotation, the company allowed newer players to access a fan-favorite legend that had become difficult to acquire on the secondary market. The design remains faithful to the original mechanically, maintaining its unique ability to gain control of all other dragons on the battlefield, which cemented its status as a staple in Commander formats focused on dragon tribal synergy.
