Provenance

Where it came from

The Kavu Mauler was released in the 2001 Magic: The Gathering set Apocalypse, the final installment of the Invasion block. Designed to reflect the desperate, high-stakes conclusion of the Phyrexian Invasion storyline, the set focused on multicolored cards that required coordination between opposing colors. The Mauler, a green creature with the ability to gain trample, was intended to be a robust mid-game threat that rewarded players for their commitment to a multicolor strategy during a period when the game's mechanics were shifting toward more complex resource management.

The card's illustration was provided by artist Greg Staples, who captured the creature's aggressive, primal nature through a dynamic and textured style characteristic of the era. The Kavu creatures were established as a central biological defense force for the planet Dominaria, and Staples' rendering emphasized their monstrous, beast-like morphology. The card was generally well-received by players of the time as an efficient common-rarity creature that helped define the limited environment of the Invasion block.
