Provenance

Where it came from

Kavu Recluse was released in the Planeshift expansion of Magic: The Gathering in early 2001. As the second set in the Invasion block, Planeshift focused on the ongoing narrative of the Phyrexians invading the world of Dominaria, a conflict defined by multicolored cards and strong tribal themes. The Kavu, a species of ancient, lizard-like creatures reawakened to defend the plane, were a central feature of the set’s creature roster, reflecting the desperate and chaotic nature of the war.

The card was illustrated by Mike Dringenberg, a veteran artist known for his distinct, atmospheric style. Dringenberg aimed to capture the Kavu’s predatory, stealthy nature, depicting the creature blending into its environment to ambush unsuspecting foes. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for Limited play, valued for its ability to manipulate the power and toughness of other creatures on the battlefield, showcasing the tactical flexibility required by the Invasion block's environment.
