Kederekt Parasite was originally printed as a rare card in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering expansion Shards of Alara, specifically within the Conflux set. It was designed as a thematic representation of the Grixis shard, a plane defined by death, decay, and the scarcity of mana. The card's mechanics were built to punish opponents for drawing cards, a hallmark of black-aligned disruption that forces a faster, more volatile pace of play.

The original illustration was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific concept artist who helped define the dark, gothic aesthetic of Grixis. Briclot sought to convey a creature that felt both fragile and parasitic, physically manifesting the idea of draining vitality through connection. While it remained a niche utility card in constructed formats, its inclusion in The List—a curated selection of reprints appearing in Set Boosters—allowed it to reach a wider modern audience and served as a nod to the card's enduring mechanical identity within the game's history.
