Where it came from
Keep Watch was released in 2009 as part of the initial Planechase expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set introduced a unique multiplayer format where players traverse different planes of the multiverse, each offering specific global effects. Designed to support this chaotic, social style of play, the card functions as an instant that rewards players for interacting during combat, effectively turning an opponent's aggressive play into an opportunity for card advantage.
The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who has contributed to the game for decades. His illustration captures the atmospheric, high-fantasy tone associated with the Planechase release. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by the commander and casual multiplayer communities for its efficiency, as it scales naturally with the number of creatures attacking, making it a reliable utility piece in decks focused on group interaction.
