Where it came from
Keldon Champion was introduced in the Planechase release of 2009, specifically as part of the Metallic Dreams deck. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to expand the Magic: The Gathering experience by introducing planar travel mechanics, allowing players to incorporate extra-dimensional locations into their matches. The card itself, originally printed in the Urza's Destiny set in 1999, was included here to bolster the aggressive red creature base of the themed deck.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Greg Staples, whose work often leans into the gritty, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the late nineties. The design intent for the Keldon Champion was to capture the essence of a brutal, opportunistic warrior, reflecting the Keldon culture’s reliance on swift and punishing martial force. Upon its release, the card was well-regarded by players for its efficiency as a red creature that could apply immediate pressure, solidifying its place as a staple of early aggressive deck building.
