Where it came from
Kess, Dissident Mage was originally introduced in the 2017 Commander anthology release, designed by Wizards of the Coast to provide a powerful Grixis-colored commander focused on graveyard recursion. The character of Kess was developed as a brilliant but unorthodox archmage from the plane of Grixis, reflecting the set's emphasis on high-stakes, strategic gameplay where players can cast spells directly from their discard pile, effectively doubling the utility of every card in their deck.
This specific iteration is part of The List, a curated selection of reprints integrated into Set Boosters to introduce iconic cards to a modern audience. Featuring the distinctive planeswalker symbol in the bottom-left corner, these reprints maintain the original artistic vision of Zack Stella, whose illustration captures Kess's commanding presence and dark, fluid magical style. The card remains highly regarded among enthusiasts for its mechanical synergy and its role in defining the competitive Commander meta.
