Provenance

Where it came from

Key to the City was originally introduced in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Kaladesh. It was designed as a thematic artifact representing the clandestine nature of the city of Ghirapur, allowing players to discard cards to grant their creatures unblockable status and draw cards in return. The card quickly became a staple in Commander and Cube environments for its utility in graveyard-focused strategies and aggressive deck archetypes.

The version presented here is part of The Brothers' War Retro Artifacts sub-set, released in 2022. This special frame treatment was created to honor the history of the game by reimagining modern cards with the aesthetics of the 1990s original card layout. Illustrated by various artists to match the artifact-heavy theme of the set, these retro frames were widely received by long-term collectors as a nostalgic nod to the game's earliest years.
