Khalni Hydra

Khalni Hydra was originally released in the 2010 Rise of the Eldrazi set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed as a high-mana rare creature, the card reflects the set's theme of massive, world-altering entities. Its mechanic, which reduces the creature's casting cost based on the number of green permanents the player controls, was intended to reward players for committing heavily to the green color identity, a hallmark of the set's strategic focus on mana ramp and board presence.

The card features artwork by Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the overwhelming scale and tangled, forest-like nature of the Hydra. Within the broader history of the game, the Hydra serves as an example of the 'big creature' aesthetic prevalent in early modern design.
