What it does

At the beginning of your upkeep, you may pay 2 generic mana black mana. If you do, return a creature card at random from your graveyard to the battlefield. It gains flying, trample, and haste. Exile that card at the beginning of your next end step. If it would leave the battlefield, exile it instead of putting it anywhere else.

Provenance

Where it came from

Kheru Lich Lord was released in 2014 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Khans of Tarkir. The card represents the Sultai Brood, one of the five warring factions of the Tarkir plane, which draws heavily from South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Islamic architectural and mythological influences. Mechanically, the card was designed to highlight the set's graveyard-focused mechanics, specifically delve and the recurring theme of undead servitude, placing it firmly within the green, black, and blue color identity of the Sultai.

The artwork for Kheru Lich Lord was commissioned from illustrator Nils Hamm, whose distinctive, atmospheric style defines much of the visual identity of the Sultai. Hamm sought to convey the stagnant, decaying majesty of the faction, focusing on the necrotic transformation of the Kheru warriors. Upon its release, the card was received primarily as a tool for limited formats and tribal graveyard decks, noted for its ability to transform creature cards into zombified iterations of their former selves.
