Where it came from
Kimahri, Valiant Guardian was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair x Final Fantasy Commander set. This card serves as a tribute to Kimahri Ronso, a stoic and steadfast character from Final Fantasy X who serves as the protector of the game's protagonist. The card design leans into his identity as a Ronso warrior, utilizing the Blue-Red-Green color identity to reflect his versatile 'Blue Mage' skill set, which allows him to learn and mimic the abilities of his opponents.
The card features artwork that highlights Kimahri’s signature spear and his imposing, feline-like stature. As with other cards in this crossover collaboration, the aesthetic bridges the gap between the stylized, high-fantasy visuals of Magic: The Gathering and the iconic character design of the Final Fantasy franchise. The card was well-received by fans of both properties, particularly for its mechanical integration of the 'overrun' style abilities that mirror Kimahri's role in the source material.
