Kindle

Kindle was originally printed as a common card in the 2002 Torment expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Its inclusion in the 2018 Masters 25 set served as a retrospective tribute to the game's quarter-century history, selecting cards that represented significant mechanical or thematic touchstones from each of the twenty-five years of the game's existence. The card represents the set's 2002 contribution, highlighting the specific flavor of the Odyssey block.

The original artwork was illustrated by Franz Vohwinkel, whose work defined much of the visual identity of early 2000s Magic cards. In designing the piece, Vohwinkel leaned into the aggressive, elemental nature of red-aligned sorceries. Upon its initial release and subsequent reprints, the card was received as a straightforward, efficient burn spell, valued by players for its scalability and its utility in limited formats where manipulating graveyard counts was a central strategic theme.
