Where it came from
Dragon's Eye Savants was first printed as part of the Khans of Tarkir expansion in 2014, later appearing in the Masters 25 set in 2018. The card reflects the lore of the Jeskai Way, a monastic clan on the plane of Tarkir that values wisdom, martial arts, and the study of dragon magic. As a blue creature with the 'morph' ability, it embodies the deceptive and intellectual nature of the Jeskai, allowing players to play the card face-down as a mystery to their opponents.
The artwork for this particular iteration was created by the artist Magali Villeneuve, known for her detailed and evocative fantasy illustrations within the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Villeneuve's design emphasizes the scholarly and vigilant aesthetic of the Savants, depicting them as mystical guardians. Upon its release in the Masters 25 set—a collection intended to celebrate the game's twenty-five-year history—the card was welcomed by players as a functional reprint that highlighted the unique mechanics of the original Khans block.
