Kindled Fury

Kindled Fury was released in 2017 as part of the Hour of Devastation expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set serves as the second half of the Amonkhet block, following the narrative of the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas as he returns to the desert plane of Amonkhet to enact his destructive plans. Mechanically, the card was designed to provide red decks with a versatile combat trick, offering both a power boost and the first strike ability to help creatures overcome unfavorable blocking situations during the mid-game.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Craig J. Spearing, whose work often focuses on dynamic action and fantasy landscapes. In this piece, Spearing captures the chaotic, scorching energy of the set’s apocalyptic theme, visualizing the essence of raw fire being channeled into a strike. As a common card, it was widely distributed within booster packs and intended primarily for the Limited draft environment, where players rely on such spells to manage combat tempo and preserve their creatures during the high-stakes battles characteristic of the set's release.
