Where it came from
Kitchen Imp was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing the standard rotation of the Standard format. Wizards of the Coast intended for the set to provide high-complexity cards that cater to long-term players and competitive formats, with the Imp designed as a versatile, tempo-oriented creature that rewards synergy-heavy graveyard strategies.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who is known for his atmospheric and stylized depictions of fantastical creatures. For the Kitchen Imp, Voss leaned into the mischievous and eerie nature of the creature's lore, utilizing a vibrant color palette that helps the card stand out in the crowded landscape of black-aligned creatures. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its 'evoke' ability, which allowed for flexible utility throughout the game while fueling reanimation or delirium mechanics.
