Where it came from
The Knight Exemplar promo card was released in 2010 as part of the Magic 2011 (M11) set cycle. Distributed primarily through Friday Night Magic events at local game stores, this promotional version featured alternate artwork by Greg Staples, who was tasked with updating the character's visual identity for the Core Set environment. The design goal was to emphasize the knight's role as a tactical leader within a tribal deck, providing a protective aura to other knights on the battlefield.
Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community, particularly among players dedicated to the white tribal archetype. The artwork by Staples is frequently cited by collectors for its polished aesthetic and dramatic lighting, which helped solidify the Knight Exemplar as a quintessential example of the promotional card quality typical of the late 2000s era. Its status remains anchored to its utility in casual formats and its history within the mid-lifecycle of the game's core set rotations.
