Where it came from
The Kobayashi Maru scenario card originates from the Starfleet CCG expansion set, which was released in 1995 by Decipher, Inc. This set was designed to immerse players in the tactical challenges of the Star Trek universe, with the Kobayashi Maru card specifically designed to replicate the infamous no-win simulation used by Starfleet Academy to test character and command composure in impossible situations.
The design of the card utilizes iconic imagery associated with the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where the simulation was first depicted. Decipher’s design team aimed to balance the card's mechanical utility as an 'event' card with the narrative weight of the original source material. It was generally well-received by players for successfully translating the thematic frustration of the simulation into a functional gameplay mechanic.
