Kodama's Reach was first printed in Champions of Kamigawa in 2004, designed as a staple of the green color identity to provide both mana ramp and card advantage. The card depicts a spiritual, nature-based aesthetic inherent to the Kamigawa plane, which draws heavily from Japanese folklore and Shinto concepts. By the time it was included in the Commander 2015 set as card number 188, it had already solidified its status as an essential utility spell for green-based decks in the Commander format.

The art for this specific printing retains the original illustration by Daren Bader, whose work is characterized by a dreamlike, ethereal style that fits the otherworldly nature of the Kodama spirits. The design's mechanical efficiency—allowing a player to search for two lands, one onto the battlefield and one into the hand—ensures that the card remains highly regarded for its versatility.
