Provenance

Where it came from

Koth of the Hammer was introduced in the 2010 Magic: The Gathering set Scars of Mirrodin, marking a pivotal return to the plane of Mirrodin after a seven-year absence. As a geomancer and the leader of the Mirran resistance against the invading Phyrexians, Koth was designed to embody the raw, aggressive essence of Red mana. His character arc was central to the narrative of the block, representing the desperate struggle of the inhabitants against the metal-consuming corruption of New Phyrexia.

The card illustration was commissioned from artist Jason Chan, who sought to capture Koth’s heavy, stone-manipulating power and stoic resolve. Chan’s depiction emphasizes the jagged, metallic landscape of Mirrodin and the visceral strength of the character. Upon release, the card was highly regarded by the player base for its aggressive efficiency and iconic role in competitive Standard-format decks of the era, cementing its status as one of the most recognizable planeswalkers from the Scars of Mirrodin block.
