Where it came from
The Kraken's Eye was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, later appearing in the Tenth Edition base set in 2007. As part of a cycle of five artifacts known as the 'lucky charms,' it was designed to provide incremental life gain whenever a player cast a spell of a specific color, in this case, blue. These cards were intended as entry-level tools to help newer players stabilize their life totals during the early game.
The Tenth Edition artwork for the Kraken's Eye was illustrated by Heather Hudson, who provided a mystical, maritime aesthetic consistent with the card's theme. During its time in the Tenth Edition, the card was received primarily as a limited-format inclusion or a budget-friendly option for casual play. While it never saw significant competitive play in high-level tournament circuits, it remains a recognizable relic of the game's long-standing base set design philosophy.
