Where it came from
Krovikan Fetish was released in the 1995 Ice Age expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As part of the first stand-alone expansion, the card reflects the set's dark, wintry aesthetic, which was heavily influenced by Nordic themes and a post-apocalyptic narrative centered on the freezing of the plane of Dominaria.
The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prominent artist in early Magic: The Gathering history known for his distinctive, flowing ink style. The artwork depicts the ritualistic, sacrificial nature of the Krovikan cultists, capturing the gruesome flavor intended by the game designers to define the black-aligned cards of the Ice Age setting.
