Where it came from
Krovikan Plague was released in the 1996 expansion Alliances, a pivotal set in the Magic: The Gathering history that introduced the concept of pitch spells and solidified the narrative of the Ice Age block. The card depicts the oppressive, necrotic magic associated with the Krov community, a faction of humans who allied with the Phyrexians during the conflict on the plane of Dominaria, reflecting the set's dark and desperate thematic core.
The artwork was illustrated by Melissa A. Benson, a prominent contributor to the game’s early aesthetic whose style often emphasized moody, visceral textures. Her rendering of the plague visually communicates the pervasive and lingering nature of the enchantment, which functioned as a recurring damage-over-time effect, earning it a reputation as a difficult card for opponents to navigate in limited formats and early constructed environments.
