Provenance

Where it came from

Kulrath Knight was released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was designed to explore a world of eternal twilight and fairy-tale horror, focusing heavily on the concept of hybrid mana and the synergy between creatures with different abilities. The set was created to follow the Lorwyn block, intentionally shifting the tone from high-fantasy whimsy to a darker, more ominous aesthetic that resonated with long-term players.

The card was illustrated by the artist Dave Kendall, whose work is known for its moody, gothic, and often unsettling depictions of fantastical creatures. In designing the Knight, Kendall aimed to visually communicate the card’s mechanical focus on placing -1/-1 counters on opposing creatures, utilizing a shadowy, armored silhouette that blends into the grim atmosphere of the Shadowmoor plane. Upon its release, the card became a notable inclusion in casual play, specifically within strategies centered around counter manipulation.
