Provenance

Where it came from

Lab Rats was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Tempest block, Stronghold was designed by Mark Rosewater and Mike Elliott to focus on mechanical complexity and aggressive gameplay, building upon the narrative of the Weatherlight Saga. The card itself reflects the set's darker, more industrial aesthetic, depicting the bio-engineered experiments conducted by the villainous Phyrexian forces.

The card's illustration was crafted by artist Ron Spencer, whose work during this era of Magic defined much of the game’s gritty, visceral visual identity. Spencer utilized a heavy, shadow-laden style to emphasize the grotesque nature of the subjects. While the card is often cited by players for its flavor text and thematic role in the Phyrexian lore, it remains a modest utility piece within the broader history of black-aligned card mechanics from the late nineties.
