Lab Rats was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Tempest block, Stronghold was designed by Mark Rosewater and Mike Elliott to focus on mechanical complexity and aggressive gameplay, building upon the narrative of the Weatherlight Saga.
