Provenance

Where it came from

Lantern Kami was released in 2004 as part of the Champions of Kamigawa expansion, the first set in a block inspired by Japanese mythology and folklore. The design team sought to capture the aesthetic of Shinto spirits, or kami, representing them as ephemeral, otherworldly entities. This card specifically depicts a spirit manifesting from a paper lantern, illustrating the set's central theme of the blurred boundaries between the physical world and the spirit realm.

The artwork was created by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic illustrators in the early history of the game. He utilized a vibrant, ethereal style to give the spirit a sense of weightlessness and glowing warmth. Upon release, the card was recognized for its straightforward utility in limited formats and its contribution to the cohesive visual identity of the Kamigawa plane, which remains one of the most distinct settings in the game's history.
