What it does

Counter target spell. If that spell is countered this way, put it on top of its owner's library instead of into that player's graveyard.

Without a connection of mind and body, magic is just an idea stuck in the head, a word on the tip of a tongue.

Provenance

Where it came from

Lapse of Certainty was originally released as a rare card in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering expansion Conflux. As part of the Alara block, the card reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic of the setting, where the world of Alara was fragmented into five distinct shards. The card was designed as a white counterspell, an unconventional effect for the color, intended to provide white decks with a precarious and temporary defensive tool that forces a card to the top of the library rather than to the graveyard.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Dan Dos Santos, who sought to capture the ethereal and taxing nature of divine intervention. His illustration depicts a moment of spiritual hesitation or faltering resolve, fitting the card's mechanical theme of delaying an opponent's progress. Since its introduction, the card has been reprinted as part of The List, a curated selection of historical cards periodically included in modern booster packs to introduce newer players to the game's deep tactical history.
