Provenance

Where it came from

Last Stand was originally released as a rare sorcery in the Invasion expansion set of Magic: The Gathering in 2000. It was designed as a multicolored payoff card, rewarding players who managed to control permanents representing all five colors of the game. Its inclusion in the 2016 Planechase Anthology was a strategic choice by Wizards of the Coast to support the multicolored nature of the preconstructed decks featured in that boxed set, providing a powerful, high-variance board wipe or finisher.

The artwork was provided by Ron Spencer, a prolific illustrator known for his distinct, expressive, and often visceral style during Magic's early to mid-era. Spencer’s depiction of a chaotic, multi-colored magical surge captures the overwhelming nature of the spell’s effect. Upon its original release, the card was viewed by players as a quintessential 'build-around' card, prized for its high risk and high reward potential in casual and multiplayer formats rather than competitive tournament play.
