Lava Axe

Lava Axe was released in 1998 as part of the Portal Second Age set, a standalone product designed by Wizards of the Coast to act as an entry-level bridge for new players. The set utilized a simplified ruleset that removed the complexity of instant-speed spells, focusing instead on a straightforward, sorcery-heavy gameplay loop that emphasized combat and direct damage.

The artwork for this version was provided by Jeff Miracola, who captured the raw, elemental violence of the card through a dynamic, fiery depiction of the weapon. While the card is a functional reprint of a concept dating back to the earliest iterations of Magic: The Gathering, the Portal Second Age aesthetic was received as a clean, accessible departure from the more intricate and sometimes crowded illustrations found in the standard base sets of that era.
