Provenance

Where it came from

Lead Astray was released in 2002 as part of the Judgment expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set served as the third and final installment of the Odyssey block, a narrative arc centered on the struggle for control of the Mirari, a powerful magical artifact. The card was designed as a black-aligned sorcery intended to disrupt an opponent's strategy by allowing a player to look at an opponent's hand and discard a non-land card of their choice.

The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the game's most iconic early illustrators. His approach for this piece leaned into the dark, thematic aesthetic common to the set, emphasizing the psychological manipulation inherent in black mana spells. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, if situational, tool for control-oriented decks, finding its place alongside other hand-disruption spells that defined the high-stakes tactical environment of competitive play during that era.
