Provenance

Where it came from

Leap was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the second set in the Rath Cycle, Stronghold was designed to lean into the game's evolving mechanics regarding creature movement and combat manipulation, reflecting the high-stakes environment of the Phyrexians' stronghold on the plane of Rath.

The card features artwork by artist Donato Giancola, whose work is celebrated for its technical mastery of light and human anatomy. In designing this card, Giancola aimed to capture the kinetic energy of a swift, tactical maneuver. The card saw moderate play in limited formats as a functional utility tool, prized for its ability to grant flying to creatures and provide card selection, which were essential components of blue's strategic identity during the late nineties.
