Where it came from
Leinore, Autumn Sovereign was released in 2021 as one of the primary display commanders for the Coven Counters deck in the Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. This set returned players to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on the human resistance against the encroaching eternal night. The card represents the leader of the Gavony coven, designed to embody the themes of communal growth and protective magic inherent to the human factions of the setting.
The card’s illustration was created by Magali Villeneuve, a celebrated artist in the fantasy field known for her detailed character work. Villeneuve focused on capturing Leinore's role as a solemn leader, emphasizing her connection to the autumnal cycles of Innistrad. The design features a human warlock with an ability set centered on distributing +1/+1 counters, a mechanic intended to reflect the cooperative strength of the coven, which was well-received by players for its synergy with token-based and creature-heavy strategies.
