Provenance

Where it came from

Leonin Abunas was released in 2003 as part of the Mirrodin expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set introduced players to the plane of Mirrodin, a metallic world created by the silver golem Karn, where biological and mechanical life forms coexist. The Abunas were conceptualized as a feline race indigenous to the Razor Fields, deeply spiritual guardians tasked with protecting the sanctity of their people and artifacts.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Pete Venters, who sought to emphasize the protective, stoic nature of the Leonin race. Venters depicted the figure draped in ceremonial garb and wielding a staff, reinforcing its role as a supportive cleric within the game's mechanics. The design was well-received for its clear thematic integration, effectively conveying the defensive identity of the white mana color identity through its ability to provide shroud to other artifacts.
