Leyline of Lifeforce

Leyline of Lifeforce was released in early 2006 as part of the Guildpact expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a card within the Ravnica block, it introduced the 'Leyline' cycle—a unique group of enchantments that offered players the opportunity to begin the game with them on the battlefield if they were in their opening hand. This design was intended to provide strategic flexibility for green-aligned decks, specifically aiming to render creature spells uncounterable, which served as a direct mechanical counter to control-heavy archetypes of the era.

The card features artwork by artist Darrell Riche, who utilized a lush, verdant aesthetic to reflect the essence of nature and life force central to the Selesnya Conclave’s identity within the Ravnica setting. Critics and players noted the card for its specific utility in tournament play, particularly in formats where countermagic was prevalent. While it did not immediately dominate the competitive landscape, its innovative design established a template for future Leyline iterations that would become staples in the game’s long-standing history.
