Provenance

Where it came from

The Lhurgoyf first appeared as a rare card in the 1995 Magic: The Gathering expansion Ice Age, illustrated by Pete Venters. The creature was designed to embody a sense of graveyard-based horror, growing in power as more cards accumulated in the discard pile. Its unique ability captured the imagination of players, eventually leading to its selection for the limited Oversized League Prizes promotional series.

The oversized printing of this card served as a trophy for participants in organized play leagues during the mid-to-late 1990s. These cards were manufactured at a significantly larger scale than standard playing cards, intended primarily for display rather than deck use. While the oversized format was largely a novelty, the Lhurgoyf remains a standout piece among collectors due to its iconic status as an early game power card.
