Where it came from
Lightning Mare was released in 2018 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2019. This set served to reintroduce players to the game's foundational mechanics and lore, marking a return to a more traditional structure after several years of block-based sets. The card was designed as an uncommon creature specifically intended for red-aligned decks, emphasizing the color's thematic aggressive tendencies through haste and its inability to be countered by blue spells.
The artwork for Lightning Mare was created by the illustrator Jesper Ejsing. Known for his dynamic use of color and motion, Ejsing sought to capture the elemental, ephemeral nature of a construct made of pure electricity. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional and flavorful sideboard tool for competitive players, appreciated for its specific utility against control-based strategies that relied heavily on countermagic.
