Where it came from
Lightning Rift was originally introduced in the Onslaught set in 2002, where it became a cornerstone of cycling-themed decks. The card was designed to incentivize the use of the cycling keyword, rewarding players for discarding cards to draw new ones by providing a repeatable damage effect. Its inclusion in the Commander 2020 preconstructed deck 'Arcane Maelstrom' marked a resurgence for the enchantment, bringing its strategic utility to a new generation of players who favor the card-advantage loops central to the Commander format.
The artwork for the Commander 2020 version, illustrated by Johann Bodin, captures the volatile, elemental nature of the Rift through vibrant reds and oranges. Bodin's approach emphasizes the sudden discharge of energy that occurs whenever a player cycles, visually representing the card's function as a defensive and offensive tool. The card is widely appreciated in the Magic: The Gathering community for its ability to stabilize board states and provide a consistent mana sink during the late game.
