Liliana Vess

Liliana Vess made her debut in the 2007 Magic: The Gathering set Lorwyn, serving as one of the original five planeswalker cards that introduced a new card type to the game. Designed by the R&D team at Wizards of the Coast, these cards were intended to represent powerful spellcasters who could traverse the multiverse, acting as recurring allies or adversaries rather than single-use spells. Her introduction established her character as a necromancer bound by dark pacts, marking a significant shift in the game's narrative focus toward character-driven storytelling.

The iconic illustration for this card was created by Aleksi Briclot, whose work defined the aesthetic of the Lorwyn planeswalkers. Briclot sought to convey a sense of elegance and menace, emphasizing her purple-hued magic and ethereal, haunting presence. Upon release, the card was received with immense interest from both collectors and competitive players, as its ability to manipulate the library and graveyard introduced mechanical complexities that became a staple of the black color identity in subsequent years.
