Where it came from
Lion Umbra was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As an enchantment belonging to the Aura subtype, it features the 'Totem Armor' mechanic, a popular design element first introduced in the Rise of the Eldrazi set that provides a shield against the destruction of the enchanted creature. The card was designed to support aggressive strategies within the game's Modern format, specifically targeting creature-based decks that benefit from protective buffs.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who focused on depicting the mystical, ethereal nature of the umbra enchantment. The visual style adheres to the high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, emphasizing a spectral lion construct intertwined with the aura’s energy. Upon release, it was received as a functional tool for Aura-themed decks, appreciated by players for its utility in maintaining board presence during high-stakes competitive play.
