Living Lands

Living Lands was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering. Created by Wizards of the Coast, the game was designed by Richard Garfield to combine the mechanics of trading card games with complex fantasy strategy. Beta served as the second print run of the core game, featuring a more stable printing process and slightly refined card stock compared to the preceding Alpha release, establishing the foundational aesthetics for the early game.

The card features artwork by Dameon Willich, one of the original illustrators commissioned for the core set. His style contributed to the distinct, eclectic, and hand-drawn aesthetic that defined the game's earliest years before digital art became the standard. The card’s effect, which turns all lands into creatures, reflects the chaotic and experimental nature of early spell design, intended to create high-impact, thematic moments on the battlefield that were highly characteristic of the era’s design philosophy.
