Lord of the Accursed

Lord of the Accursed was originally introduced in the Amonkhet expansion of Magic: The Gathering, designed as a powerful tribal lord to support the Zombie creature type. Its mechanics were intentionally built to reward players for filling the battlefield with undead minions, reflecting the set's Egyptian-inspired theme of a civilization obsessed with death and eternal service. The illustration by Greg Opalinski captures this malevolent authority, portraying the figure as a commanding, armored entity emerging from the dunes, which solidified its status as an iconic visual representation of the set's necromantic aesthetic.

This specific iteration from the Aetherdrift Commander set recontextualizes the card for the social, multiplayer-focused Commander format. By including it in a dedicated deck release, the designers ensured that Zombie tribal strategies remained viable for players engaging in longer, strategic games. Upon its initial debut and subsequent reprints, the card was well-received by the player base for its balanced combination of an aggressive buff ability and an active keyword-granting effect, cementing its place as a staple inclusion for black-aligned creature-heavy decks.
