Provenance

Where it came from

Lord of the Pit was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set as one of the most imposing creatures in the early days of Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to capture the flavor of high-risk, high-reward demonic power, requiring a sacrifice of a creature each turn to keep the massive 7/7 flying demon in play. The original illustration by Christopher Rush became iconic, defining the aesthetic of early black mana cards with its dark, menacing portrayal of a pit lord.

The 30th Anniversary Edition, which includes this version as collector number 408, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022 to commemorate three decades of the game. These cards were produced with a distinct non-tournament-legal back and a retro frame to evoke nostalgia for the original 1993 printings. While the set was met with significant debate regarding its premium pricing and limited availability, it serves as a modern tribute to the foundational cards that shaped the game's initial identity.
