Lord of the Undead

Lord of the Undead was originally introduced in the Stronghold expansion set in 1998, designed to bolster tribal decks centered on Zombie creatures. The artwork for the Eighth Edition printing, rendered by Greg Staples, shifts the creature's aesthetic toward a more visceral, gothic interpretation of necromancy that aligns with the set's role as a cornerstone of the modern core set era. The design intent was to provide players with a repeatable utility card that could both buff the power of other undead units and recover them from the graveyard, solidifying its place as a staple of black-aligned strategies.

The Eighth Edition printing marked the first time the card featured the updated frame design that became standard for the game, moving away from the classic parchment-style borders to a more modern, cleaner aesthetic.
