Where it came from
Lotus Field was introduced in the Core Set 2020 expansion as a high-risk, high-reward land card designed to evoke the legendary Black Lotus, one of the most powerful cards in the game's history. By requiring the player to sacrifice two lands upon entry, the card balances its ability to tap for three mana of any color with a significant tempo setback, reflecting a design philosophy centered on mana fixing and late-game acceleration.
The art for this card, illustrated by Cliff Childs, captures a serene yet ethereal landscape that emphasizes the mystical nature of the mana source. The promotional version, designated as 249s, features unique border treatments characteristic of the Core Set 2020 promotional cycle, which were distributed through various organized play channels to celebrate the set's release and reward active participants in the community.
