Where it came from
Loyal Unicorn was originally released in the Commander 2018 product line before being reprinted in the 2023 Commander Masters set, designated as card number 40. The card was designed to support the 'Lieutenant' mechanic, which provides static bonuses to a player's board state while they control their designated commander, reflecting the collaborative and social nature of the Commander format.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss. Known for his ethereal and vibrant fantasy style, Voss leaned into the archetypal depiction of the unicorn as a majestic, protective creature. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece for creature-heavy decks, praised by the community for its ability to grant vigilance and prevent damage, effectively stabilizing the board during mid-game exchanges.
