Where it came from
Lu Xun, Scholar General (Collector Number 2840) was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair series, specifically within the 'Special Guest: Yoji Shinkawa' drop. This collection reimagines iconic Magic cards through the distinct, ink-wash aesthetic of the legendary artist Yoji Shinkawa, best known for his work on the Metal Gear series. The choice of Lu Xun reflects the game’s deep historical connections to the Three Kingdoms era, grounding the stylistic departure in established lore.
The design seeks to bridge traditional East Asian brushwork with the dynamic, cinematic framing characteristic of Shinkawa’s portfolio. By utilizing his signature sparse linework and high-contrast composition, the card functions both as a functional game piece and as a standalone work of fine art. Upon release, the set was received with significant enthusiasm by collectors who appreciated the synthesis of a respected illustrator's unique visual language with the mechanical identity of a classic card.
