Lurking Nightstalker

Lurking Nightstalker was released in 1998 as part of the Portal Second Age set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for newer players, focusing on simplified card mechanics and a more streamlined gameplay experience compared to the complex interactions found in the standard base sets of the time. The expansion drew its aesthetic inspiration from the lore of the plane of Dominaria, specifically focusing on the conflict between various factions during a period of upheaval.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Brian Snoddy, whose style during this period often emphasized gritty, high-contrast character designs. In keeping with the Portal philosophy, the design team opted for a straightforward ability set that allowed players to engage with the game's combat mechanics without excessive rule overhead. While the set was criticized by some long-term players for its lack of depth, it succeeded in its goal of acting as an accessible entry point for beginners and remains a nostalgic artifact of late-nineties trading card design.
