Provenance

Where it came from

Makeshift Mannequin was originally released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a versatile uncommon card, it belongs to a mechanical tradition of graveyard recursion, allowing players to return a creature from their graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter at the cost of sacrificing it later if it becomes the target of a spell or ability. It was later reprinted in the Archenemy release, a product line centered on a one-versus-many multiplayer format, which featured cards selected for their utility in high-variance, social game environments.

The illustration for the card was created by artist Jesper Ejsing. Known for his evocative and often dark fantasy aesthetic, Ejsing sought to capture the unsettling, construct-like nature of the spell, depicting a stitched-together figure rising from the earth. The card’s design reflects the gothic and grim aesthetic of the Shadowmoor setting, where traditional morality and form are often twisted. It remains a notable example of the era's focus on interactive, high-risk graveyard mechanics.
