Provenance

Where it came from

Mana Leak first appeared in the Stronghold expansion in 1998, designed as a core component of blue control archetypes. By the time it was featured in the Eighth Edition core set in 2003, it had already established itself as a staple of competitive play due to its efficient mana-taxing effect, which forces opponents to pay additional mana or suffer the cancellation of their spell.

The Eighth Edition printing features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and celebrated illustrators in the early history of Magic: The Gathering. Rush’s portrayal of a wizard struggling to maintain containment over a chaotic, swirling magical energy reflects the card's mechanical function of momentary interference, cementing its status as an iconic piece of fantasy design.
